Considering that 1.65 billion US is less than 2% of its total market capitalization. At least it can prevent Youtube being acquired by other competitors and it can save Google's time in developing its own service to such a big scale as Youtube. Google may not have got better technology at the moment. Acquisition could be the best solution. It spent some money to speed up the development, acquire a pool of customers & destroy a rival.
